You Take After Your Mother
"He felt his nails push through the calluses built up from years of rage..."
“Hi Dearie, what do you want to eat for din-din?” an old gentle voice asked over the phone. “Grandma I don’t have time for this, just cook whatever ok?” Robert said with a large sigh. A rapid tapping noise comes from the phone and Grandma spoke “If you didn’t lose your keys, you would have been home by now or if your god forsaken mother didn’t take my son with her to on in the ocean”.
Robert tried to hold back his anger, but he still lashed out “Grandma how about you shove your damn cat Sprinkles in the oven and cook it? I’m sure it hasn’t started to decay yet”. Robert could hear the shocked expression form on his grandma’s face. Couple of minutes past until someone said something. “You’re not welcome back here again…. You aren’t my grandson, I hope God strikes you and your mother down.” Robert bit his lip and refrained from replying. “I never liked calling you family, your mother took my amazing son from me and took him to the ocean” Grandma viciously spoke. The water around Robert started to boil from his rage for his Grandma. He clenched his right fist harder and harder, wanting so much to lash out, lash out at anything. He felt his nails push through the calluses built up from years of rage and blood flowed through his fingers. He unclenched his hand slowly and knew more calluses would form over the old. They always did.
Robert ended the call before the rage could change to words, so he started to swim to his home under the sea when he got a call from his Dad. “Hello?” Robert said as he tried not to hang up from his rage. “Hey Sport, did you talk to Grandma?” his dad said. “First don’t call me Sport and…” his dad cut him off before he could finish “I know you just talked to her by the sound of your voice, you’re mad and I understand” Dad said with a caring tone. “She insulted you and mom, why you still have to talk her” Robert said releasing ink. “Son I love your mother even though I’m human. I’ll stay with you and your mother and I’ll deal with Grandma. Now go back home and see your mother” his Dad said as he hanged up, Robert stayed for a while as he tried to cool down. As Robert began to move again towards home he mumbled to himself “I hate being half Kraken…” Robert then moved his tentacles fast so he could get home before nightfall.
